Wellness Wednesday (My Top 5 Favorite Wellness Activities!)

I’m going to try & be posting something daily, so I gathered some inspiration for daily blog ideas & themes. I’ll also have my real blog posts, but this is something I want to get into the habit of doing, expand on & share things that mean a lot to me.

Wellness is something I’m putting in the forefront of my life. I grew tired of years of feeling MEH & unhealthy so I started making changes last year. I hope to continue improving myself on all levels & getting strength & health along the way. So… here is my #WellnessWednesday Top 5 Favorite Wellness Activities!

1. Meditation; In the last year I was introduced to a place I could go & have guided meditations. I now try to go once a week if possible & I even got my husband into it. (He has gone more than I have due to schedules recently! & my daughter joined last time & can’t wait to go again!) For $11/session, I get to rejuvenate my mind, body & spirit. Not only that, but I gained a friend in the process. We usually start with a moment of grounding/prayer, an oracle card reading which we share with the group & then split up for the guided meditation. I usually bring a yoga mat & there are pillows & blankets to use. New people & those with health issues are given first dibs on the two comfy beds in the place. Then we are guided through the meditation. There is no wrong or right way to do it. I am sometimes aware, I am sometimes off somewhere else or even fall asleep. But I leave feeling a new sense of energy that helps get me through the week. If you are ever in the Central Florida area, I highly recommend my friend Marchelle & her place, “Into The Mystic” in Sebastian, FL.

You can also do meditation on your own. There are a lot of resources. It can be done anywhere. I tend to do my own before falling asleep or I go to the beach & just listen to the sound of the waves with controlled breathing & relaxation. Find something that works for you!

2. Coloring;

Adult coloring books have gotten increasingly popular in the last few years. I didn’t jump on the bandwagon at first. However, when I did, I absolutely loved it. I have quite the collection of coloring books now, both adult oriented & even kid ones I get from the Dollar Tree & Five Below. They range in price from $1 to maybe $12 depending on what you are getting. I have Disney, Star Wars, Harry Potter, mandalas, animals. All sorts.

In my experience, I find it really relaxing to do. As a creative person, it allows me to be expressive within the confines of a simple activity. Helps me focus, brings stress levels down & is just down right fun. I think I’ll be using coloring books for the rest of my life as a part of self care.

3. Sleeping in/naps;  With my work schedule, I usually end up having Wednesday off on a weekly basis. My favorite part of that is being able to sleep in & wake up naturally without an alarm. You know how it is, the daily workflow grind can really cause your mind, body & spirit to get out of whack. There is nothing better than slowly waking up in a peaceful manner. This has become easier now that my younger kids are in school (& I have an amazing husband who handles the morning stuff with them, which allows me to sleep undisturbed on my day off) & the house is relatively peaceful.

Naps are also amazing ways to self care. A quick way to rejuvenate, get a little burst of energy. I do find that it needs to be about an hour long, for myself at least. If not then I usually feel groggier when I wake up. I find the hour to be a good power nap.

4. Walking/Jogging/Running;

I’m not a big “be in the sun” type of person even though I’m training for a 5k at Disney World in February. I do enjoy talking walks at a local nature sanctuary called Turkey Creek & when I get to go, it’s really relaxing to be out in nature. I love the nature part, not the Florida humidity part.

However, walking/jogging/running, while tiring, can give you a great boost of energy at the end. Getting the muscles moving, blood pumping & of course, a sense of accomplishment! If you are like me, dealing with some medical issues & just getting into the workout game, try talking a walk once a day. Or just do it on your #WellnessWednesday to get started. It gets easier over time & it can be enjoyable listening to music, or nature or even with a friend.

In my training, I am doing interval running. Basically I warm up with brisk walking, then run for a minute, walk for a few minutes, then repeat. I’m building stamina. At first I thought I was going to die. & it is hard, but the sense of accomplishment when I finish a run is amazing. I sleep better too. Just remember to stay hydrated!

5. Tea Time; I absolutely love tea & having a tea time is a great way to spend a #WellnessWednesday. I have so many different kinds of teas. I really love the loose leaf teas. We have an amazing British shoppe in our town that carries all sorts of teas & tea items/accessories.

So unwind with a book, have some tea & snuggle in some blankets & pillows. Have tea with a friend & enjoy some cookies with it. Drink tea before bed to help you sleep.

I hope this list gave you some ideas for #WellnessWednesday. Self care is not selfish! Practicing self care is a great tool to stay or become healthier & happier. Have a great Wednesday!

The Leslie Lineup (new weekly feature!)

I decided I need a good inspiration to try to post at least once a week (& more if I can manage it) so I came up with “The Leslie Lineup”, a weekly list of things I’m doing, feeling, etc. Hoping you will enjoy this new feature!

➜ workflow; Looking forward to a day off on Monday after a wild & crazy Back 2 School Tax Free weekend at work. I was efficiently screamed at for doing my job & constantly moving. I’m pretty sure I got my steps in this weekend. Though I’ll be dealing with my car repair as well. Still going to sleep in as long as I can!

➜ reading; I Do It With The Lights On by Whitney Way Thore (I don’t have a ton of time to read, so this is mostly happening in the bathroom.

➜ watching; Tons of paranormal shows (The Dead Files, Haunted Things, Ghost Adventures, These Woods Are Haunted, My Haunted House, A Haunting, etc), Law & Order: SVU, Criminal Minds

➜ loving; Diet Dr. Pepper, getting Japanese food via Bite Squad, snuggles with my husband, not being in a show for a while, organizing & making my personal spaces more zen, meditation, tea, having health insurance

➜ disliking; Still being on antibiotics for the bump that won’t go away, the bald spot that bump has left behind, insomnia, bouts of loneliness, having not been on a Disney day for a while, my car needing to be repaired again, not having enough money, clutter

➜ listening; Enigma, meditation music, chakra music, The Craft soundtrack

➜ craving; potato leek soup from Biergarten at Epcot, dole whips, Publix cheesecake, Angry Orchard Rose (can’t drink ’til I’m done with my antibiotics *sadface*), fresh flowers

➜ eating; cottage cheese, california rolls, tomato sandwiches, shrimp anything

➜ drinking; tea

➜ optimistic for; getting a new car in the next few months, getting my schooling in order so I can be a CNA or MA, bowling party for work, preparing for Halloween & Christmas, getting a primary care provider to get pain under control, hopefully seeing my person soon, kids starting back at school

➜ I need; my bump to finally go away, to sleep in tomorrow, to have my car up & running again, to be more active on this blog, painkillers, more meditation, yoga

➜ feeling; relieved that my car will be fixed, excited to be off Monday & Wednesday, lonely, chronic pain, ready for a nap next week, annoyed my oldest son is screaming at his computer at 1:30 am in the morning (are his online friends hard of hearing??)

Making changes one step at a time..

I struggle a lot with self identity lately. Well I think I’ve always struggled with it. But there are certainly a lot more times in the recent months where I struggle. Decided I needed a change so I got my hair cut. I hated my style or lack there of so I asked for a layered bob. I kinda wanted a messy looking, free cut & I am pleased with it. What do you think? (The whole two people who might actually be reading this..)

It’s amazing how something so simple as a haircut can make you experience a feeling of freedom. Or even just like a moment of control over your own life. Plus the gifts to your own self esteem are priceless. I am taking small steps to improve my life, improve my view of my life & the general feeling that I have of my life.

Most people who know me might be surprised that I struggle so much. I think some would assume I am happy-go-lucky, carefree. I have my moments of that, but I have to say I am not that most of the time. I am constantly at battle with the parts of me that lie in the darkness. I know that without the darkness there can be no recognition of the light. I am very much a yin/yang. A day by day journey of finding balance. & that is a journey in itself. I am working on making myself what I want to be.

I’m taking the steps to go further my education. I plan on getting more in depth on that front in the next few months. All will be laid out on the table & I will be expressing myself in this journey with a complete & candid honesty that for a long time, scared me, but instead.. I’m hoping it will inspire others who might be where I am. No worries, that will be all revealed soon. Stay tuned for that.

Point is.. make those steps in you want in the direction of change. It couldn’t tiny or big. It could be changing jobs, or moving… or something as simple as a haircut.

The choice is yours. & enjoy the journey.

going simple.

It is kind of a weird thing. I spent so much time being worried I couldn’t come up with posts that people would want to read that I stopped writing all together. I didn’t want that. I have come to the conclusion I should stop worrying about everyone else, & write for myself. Isn’t that the point?

This year has been a sort of turning point for me. Changes on a lot of fronts. I’ve decided to make firm steps to being healthier. I have lost about 29lbs, I’m training (slowly, due to medical issues) for a RunDisney 5K next year, I’ve changed my diet a lot, going for a mostly pescatarian/vegetarian lifestyle. & I am making changes in my personal life. Choosing to not keep the toxic, dead branches to cling to my tree; instead I’m cutting them loose so that new growth can occur. I’ve had several people out of my life & realized they were causing me to drown. I’m also learning to accept things about myself that I have struggled with. Like the fact I don’t always belong, or that I’m kind of an odd person. That being lonely is sometimes a state of mind that I have to deal with & that true growth comes from God & comes from within. These truths are paving the road ahead for me.

Most of all, I am trying to simplify my life. In all aspects. I have started decluttering my house, my life, my thoughts. I want a sanctuary in every sense of the word. Simplifying the stuff is a hard process, & slow. But I will get my house in order. It might just take some time. The rest will fall into place.

I am in a good place, overall. I am happily married. We are on a firm foundation & trust levels are high. I am still deeply in love. It is indeed a happy wife, happy life.

Happy is my goal. & I’m blooming towards it.
